Fashion sales slump in May

High street fashion sales declined 5.3% last week, according to BDO’s monthly tracker.

The results comprise a 6.4% drop in clothes sales and 2.6% decrease in footwear sales, for the week ending 21 May.

The fall in like-for-like sales compares with a 3.4% decline during the same period in 2016.

Poor footfall and mixed weather conditions were blamed for the past week’s performance, with 67% of BDO’s respondents reporting negative results.

The fall in fashion sales comes as like-for-like sales across the overall retail sector fell by 3.3% for the same period. High street footfall was down by 1.3%.

Regionally, footfall in Ireland and the East Midlands bucked the downward trend after posting increases of 3.5% and 2.2% respectively, compared with the same period last year.

Footfall on high streets in the West Midlands were hardest hit seeing a decline of 6.6%, followed by the South West, which fell by 6.5%.
