Fashion sales stabilise as weather cools

Fashion and footwear sales stabilised last week with sales dropping only marginally on last year as retailers breathed a sigh of relief that the unseasonal sun had passed.

According to the BDO High Street Sales Tracker for the week to October 9 total fashion sales dropped by 1%. Clothing sales fell by 1% and footwear sales dropped by 1.3%.

Last week fashion retailers saw sales plummet to their lowest level for over two and a half years. According to the sales tracker total fashion sales dropped by 13.3%, the worst result since extreme snow impacted sales in February 2009.

Jamie Talmage, retail analyst at BDO, said the Indian weather had not helped retailers shift autumn stock.
