Fashion sales take a tumble

Sales at fashion retailers last week fell at the second fastest rate this year with sales dropping by 7%.

According to the BDO High Street Sales Tracker for the week to September 25 clothing sales fell by 7.2% and footwear sales dropped by 5.4%.

Jamie Talmage, retail analyst at BDO, said the weekly figures came up against tough comparables from last year but also said the mild weather would not have helped retailers shift autumn stock.

He added: “With the normal depressed state of the consumer there doesn’t seem to be very many promotions around to spur people on.”
