John Lewis recorded a 20% increase in fashion sales for the week to December 28 as last minute shoppers boosted Christmas trade.
Total sales were up 13.3% to £127.98m at the department store for the week, while online sales were also up 10% year on year.
The extra day in the run up to Christmas compared to last year was credited for the sales surge, with women’s accessories and nightwear performing particularly well.
December 27 was a record day for the retailer with 23 branches reaching new levels of trade. Four further city-centre shops had record sales earlier in the week peaking on Monday December 23. For the week to December 28 Stratford City led the way with 30.8% growth, followed by Swindon, Cardiff, Trafford, Chester and Glasgow who were all ahead of last year by at least 20%.
Simon Russell, director of retail operations development, said: “As we enter 2014 our focus for the next few weeks will be on inspiring customers with our new season’s stock while ensuring a good performance in our key clearance assortments can support and deliver a strong final trading period for the year.”
