Fashion sales up 6.1% at John Lewis

John Lewis recorded a 6.1% increase in fashion sales for the week to August 9, boosted by the Commonwealth Games and back to school buying.

Sports merchandise from the Glasgow games continued to sell well according to the department store retailer, while back to school kidswear is having an “excellent start to the season”.

Online sales were up 20% for the week, while total sales were up 6.1% to £69.02m.

Simon Russell, director of operations development at John Lewis, said: “High Wycombe once again led the way among our shops, continuing to capitalise on its expansion, with Southampton also standing out from the full-line department stores despite the blustery weather. The smaller at home shops once again continued their recent run with Ipswich, Tunbridge Wells and Chichester best.”
