Fashion store closures rise in 2018

Almost 200 more stores will close their doors in 2018 compared to the previous year, new data from Coresight Research has revealed.

Almost 1,195 UK stores have shut or are expected to close in 2018, compared to the 1,012 that closed in 2017.

Top of the store closures for fashion were New Look and Mothercare, with 60 stores each, followed by East at 34 and The Original Factory Shop with 32.

M&S Clothing and Home is expected to close 20 stores in 2018, House of Fraser is expected to close 12, H&M eight, Laura Ashley eight and French Connection six.

The figures also showed that openings and planned openings have also slowed, with 692 stores set to launch, compared to 952 openings in 2017. 

The rankings showed that food retailers such as Greggs, Co-op and Aldi dominated store openings in the year, launching a combined 290 stores between them during the first eight months of 2018.

The fashion chain with the most openings was M&Co, which has opened 14 stores.

H&M has opened seven stores, John Lewis, Urban Outfitters and JD Sports opened two stores each.
