For many weeks, high-profile retailers have been prematurely discounting prime labels and product, which is putting the ethics of the suppliers as well as retailers into question.
The suppliers are using the guise of the retailers’ early Sales to shift large volumes of their stock, admonishing themselves of responsibility. This becomes very obvious when you see how ineffective they all are in dealing with the situation when addressed by those of us who prefer to discount at traditional times; very few seem to have the will or clout to curtail the reckless behaviour of these maverick retailers and end up making themselves a laughing stock.
Unless they stop this they will find that indies and etailers of any significance will migrate to those suppliers where margin can still be made on products that have not been bastardised by cowboy operations. There are still a few agencies and brands who monitor this situation effectively, but they are a rare breed. It is in the interest of every sensible retailer to complain to the brand when they see this happening as it is their market which is being destroyed.
I’d like to see more retailers having the backbone to stand up and fight this. So come on guys, give ‘em hell.
