First look: Dover Street Market Los Angeles opens

Dover Street Market, the designer concept store founded by Comme des Garçons creative director Rei Kawakubo, opened its sixth worldwide location in LA’s Arts District this weekend.

The single-level 15,000 sq ft space follows the concept of its five other stores, which are known for their inspirational interiors: London (which originally opened on Dover Street in 2004, and relocated to Haymarket in 2016); Beijing, China (2011); Ginza, Japan (2012); New York (2013) and Singapore (2017).

Like its other locations, Dover Street Market Los Angeles includes a curated selection of brands: luxury names such as Gucci; emerging labels including Marine Serre and Jacquemus; and skate and streetwear brands such as Palace and Noah, alongside art, jewellery and lifestyle products.

Kawakubo designed the interior, including all Comme des Garçons brand spaces, all common and general areas, and all overriding architectural features. Within this space brands are allowed to design their own shop-in-shops. There is also a 40-seat Rose Bakery restaurant.

The LA store will also follow Dover Street Market’s seasonal “new beginning” concept, where each store closes for several days and remodels its entire interior, and designers reconfigure their spaces and launch new-season product.
