First look: William & Griffin to rebrand as Fenwick Colchester in £35m refurb

Colchester department store William & Griffin will reopen as Fenwick on 15 September following a £35m refurbishment.

The store’s floorspace has expanded by 50% to 120,000 sq ft over the two-and-a-half year programme, making it the largest department store in the region.

There will be more than 600 brands on offer when it opens, 70 of which are new to the store and 20 new to Colchester, including Eileen Fisher and Kate Spade.

There are 18 new menswear brands to the store and 15 new womenswear brands, including Joseph Ribkoff and AG Jeans. The store will also offer a free personal shopping service and dining options from Carluccio’s and Caffé Nero.

The refit aims to provide a contemporary space while remaining sympathetic to its heritage as a former merchant’s house dating back to the 15th century. The redevelopment has preserved original design features including the 50m frontage on Colchester High Street.

William & Griffin was bought by Fenwick in 2008, taking its portfolio of department stores to 11.
