Flannels to take over Sports Direct store in Plymouth

The first of three new stores for premium multibrand retailer Flannels will open this month in a vacant Sports Direct store in Plymouth.

Flannels

Flannels, part of Mike Ashley’s premium lifestyle division, will open in Plymouth, Newport and Swindon this year, taking the chain’s portfolio to 11 stores.

The Plymouth city centre store on Armada Way measures 20,000 sq ft and will be the first Flannels opening since 2011.

It will occupy a store vacated by Sports Direct when it moved its Plymouth branch to nearby New George Street in July last year.

The opening will create seven management and 25 other positions.

Flannels’ other upcoming store in Newport is listed as opening at 9-12 Commercial Street, the location of another Sports Direct store. The Swindon unit is billed for Regent Street in the town’s centre, where a Sports Direct store also trades.

However, a spokesperson for the company denied these two stores were replacing Sports Direct and instead would be new locations, for which a launch date has not been given.

Speaking about the Plymouth store, a Flannels spokesperson said: “We feel there is a huge gap in the market and our new premises will attract people searching for designer brands in the southwest.”

Drapers previously revealed Flannels plans to open a three-floor central London flagship, having relocated to a new headquarters just off Oxford Street in October 2015.

Flannels stocks menswear, womenswear, footwear and accessories from brands such as Kenzo, Dolce & Gabbana, Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith and Hugo Boss.
