Footfall slumps during Cyber Week

Footfall dropped 5.5% year on year in the week to 1 December as shoppers headed online for Cyber Monday.

The poor results were off an already low base of -3.1% in 2017, according to Springboard.

Footfall experienced a double-digit decline on Tuesday 27 November, but things improved towards the end of the week with Friday reporting 0.5% growth boosted by customers picking up online orders in store.

Footfall was poor across all destination categories, with high street traffic down 5.7% on 2017, retail parks dropped 4.3% and shopping centres fell 6.5% compared with last year.

  • Maybe if Black Friday involved ‘free parking’ for the day, there would be a different outcome. Councils need to step up.
