Footwear sales falter as poor weather hits

UK footwear sales for the week to 11 February fell by 7.3% year on year, following wet and snowy weather across the country.

However, clothing sales were up 3.5% on the same week last year, the BDO High Street Sales Tracker indicates.

Total like-for-likes were down by 6.5%, but the same week last year had Valentine’s Day included in it, which boosted sales.

Overall footfall was down 5.6% on 2016 as snowfall kept shoppers indoors. On the high street, footfall was down by 6.1%. Retail parks recorded a drop of 2.8%, while the most significant drop-off in shopper numbers was at shopping centres, where footfall declined by 6.8%.
