Former Amazon boss becomes Asos chairman

Lord Waheed Alli is stepping down as non-executive chairman of Asos, being replaced by former Amazon UK managing director Brian McBride.

McBride will formally take the reins from Alli, who has been chairman of the etailer for 12 years, on November 1.

McBride has a strong background across both retailing and technology, having spent six years leading, as well as having held senior positions at IBM, Dell and T Mobile. He also held a directorship at the British Retail Consortium.

Chief executive of Asos Nick Robertson paid tribute to Alli “for his significant contribution to the development of the company”.

“Waheed has been with us from the very beginning and played a major role in the Asos story,” he said. “I would like to express my gratitude, along with the rest of the board.”

Robertson added that McBride joined as the etailer was on a path to grow internationally, and meet its target of £1bn sales annually.

McBride said: “Asos shares many of the attributes that have made Amazon a global retailing powerhouse and I’m delighted to join the team at such an exciting time.

“I believe the company has the platform, proposition and ambition to deliver its vision of becoming the fashion destination for twenty-somethings, globally.”
