Former Hoopers boss joins Beales

Anne Horton, former managing director of Hoopers department stores, has been appointed director of retail at Beales, which operates 30 department stores.

She told Drapers: “The intention is to restore the integrity of the group by moving away from the constant discounting model.”

Horton reports to the new chairman Stuart Lyons. Former chief executive Michael Hitchcock and trading director Tony Richards have left the business.

Beales has been the subject of a recent power struggle that has seen property magnate Andrew Perloff, owner of property investment firm Panther Securities, win control of the business, which is a public company. In its most recent figures, the Beales Group’s sales, including concessions and VAT, dropped 3.7% for the full year to November 1, compared to the same period in 2013.

Horton was in charge of Hoopers between 2004 and 2012. Since then she has run her own retail consultancy. In a long career she has worked at Harrods, Simpsons and House of Fraser. She is a trustee of the trade charity Fashion & Textile Children’s Trust.
