Former Next finance boss joins Sainsbury’s as non-exec

Former Next group finance director David Keens will join Sainsbury’s as a non-executive director on Wednesday, replacing Gary Hughes who will retire on July 8.

Keens announced his retirement from Next last May and will step down next month. He was replaced as group finance director by Amanda James, who has been with the retailer for almost 20 years.

Keens has been with Next for 29 years and was finance director for 24 years.

He will join the audit committee at the supermarket chain on April 29 and become its chairman on July 8.

Sainsbury’s chairman David Tyler said: “First, I would like to thank Gary very much for everything he has done for Sainsbury’s over the last 10 years. He has been a highly effective chairman of the audit committee and has made a very valuable contribution to the board.

“We are delighted to welcome David Keens as a non-executive director. His deep retail experience and his knowledge of fast-moving consumer business are particularly relevant at a time when we are growing our own successful non-food ranges. This, together with his considerable skills in finance, makes him an ideal addition to our board.”
