Young fashion giant French Connection saw a 6.1% drop in its UK and European like-for-like retail sales in the 15 weeks to November 13, as womenswear struggled.
French Connection - which comprises a high street chain and wholesale business of the same name, as well as womenswear chain Toast - said retail sales had been slightly lower than expected but had been offset by further growth in wholesale revenue.
Wholesale revenue in the UK and Europe was up 13% compared to the same period last year and the business said wholesale forward orders for its spring 11 ranges were “well ahead of last year” which would help increase revenue towards the end of the financial year.
It cited menswear, ecommerce and contemporary womenswear retailer Toast as strong performers for the period, but said that its overall womenswear business was “softer” than last year.
Like-for-like sales in North America fell 4%.
French Connection said negotiations for the closure of certain US stores had been completed or were well advanced and due to be completed by January 31 2011.
