Friars Walk drives record shopper numbers

Around 350,000 people flocked to Friars Walk, the new £90m retail and leisure complex in Newport, Wales, for its opening weekend on November 14-15. 

The 390,000 sq ft is anchored by a 95,000 sq ft Debenhams and houses retailers including Next, H&M, Topshop, New Look and River Island.

The development attracted 102,000 visitors on its opening day, on November 12. 

Debenhams sales director Ty Edwards said: “We smashed our sales target on opening day by mid-afternoon and have achieved strong double-digit growth on our sales targets every day since.

“Our full department store product offer is being very well received by shoppers, with fashion and gifting in particular performing extremely well. We are thrilled with the feedback received from our customers and are confident sales will continue to be strong this week.”

It is estimated that Friars Walk will double retail sales in the city, adding £120m per year. Footfall is expected between 10 and 12 million a year.

The development, led by Queensberry Real Estate, is part of wider £117m regeneration programme in Newport.
