George takes anchor space at new 840,000 distribution centre

A new 840,000 sq ft warehouse has opened on Teesside that will handle more than three million items a week for George at Asda.

Clipper Logistics’ new site, at Wynyard Park will be a shared-use distribution centre, with George at Asda taking a 10-year deal for 70% of the available space as the anchor customer. The location is close to a major import centre at Teesport.

The building has three levels of mezzanine floor which creates over 840,000 sq ft of operational space, with the design allowing for further growth to 1.2m sq ft.

Ian Stansfield, Asda’s distribution director, said the “unpredecented” 10-year deal came about on the back of an existing successful relationship.

“Clipper has proven itself to be an invaluable partner to our business and the success of the bespoke solutions they have created for us has brought about significant cost and efficiency savings to our operations,” he said.

Clipper managing director Tony Mannix added: “As well as providing Asda with their bespoke solution, our new centre at Wynyard, will also offer other retailers – particularly those new to global sourcing and/or e-fulfilment - the opportunity to take advantage of deconsolidation best practice through a shared-user proposition without major capital investment.”
