Golfjunkie takes a shot at UK market

Dutch golf-inspired casualwear brand Golfjunkie has launched in the UK and opened its first UK office as it hunts for stockists.

Golfjunkie, which has about 70 wholesale accounts in countries including the Netherlands, Germany, Canada and South Africa, has set up an office in Manchester and appointed Mike Williams, former marketing director at sports brand Russell Athletic, as its UK manager.

The brand is recruiting two sales agents to sell the brand into department stores such as John Lewis and House of Fraser and indies across the UK and Republic of Ireland for spring 11. In its first year in the UK, Golfjunkie is aiming to have between 40 and 50 stockists.

The men’s and women’s premium casualwear brand targets 18 to 30-year-olds and offers polo shirts, shorts and knitwear. Wholesale prices start at £20 and go up to £50.

Williams said: “The UK has a very strong golf background and golf is moving to a younger audience. You keep seeing people in the media, like Chris Evans, playing golf and he’s someone we’d like to get associated with. We’ll look to get into selected indies and department stores.”

Williams said the brand sees golf fashion brands Bunker Mentality and J Lindeberg as its main UK rivals. Golfjunkie also plans to enter the Japanese market next year.
