Government pledges £50m to flood victims

Chancellor George Osborne has announced a £50m fund for individuals and businesses affected by the floods in Cumbria and Lancashire.

Osborne said funds will be distributed by local councils, in an effort to overcome “administrative problems” that delayed previous emergency payments.

Claimants will be able to access up to £5,000 each.

An estimated 5,000 businesses and households in Cumbria and Lancashire are also to be given temporary relief from their business rates and council tax.
