Graduate Fashion Week winners crowned

Lauren Smith from Edinburgh College of Art has scooped the top award at this year’s Graduate Fashion week winning the £20,000 prize.

Smith was named as the winner at an awards ceremony at Earls Court yesterday (June 5), which was hosted by designer Henry Holland and presenter Zara Martin.

The judging panel, which included George at Asda brand director Fiona Lambert, designer Roland Mouret and Fenwick’s Bond Street managing director David Walker-Smith, picked Smith as the winner of the GFW George Gold Award.

Walker-Smith said: “What we liked particularly was Lauren’s mind connection through her doodles – you can see it in her leather work, print and applique. We could see a very clear thought process throughout the collection, great originality. Lauren was one of three really standout collections for me.”

Further winners from the event included Hannah Williams from UCA Epsom who picked up the Womenswear Award, while Shauni Douglas and Olivia Creber from Edinburgh College of Art won the Menswear Award.

The Zandra Rhodes Catwalk Textile Award went to Kirandeep Bassan from Northampton University and the Stuart Peters Visionary Knitwear Award was given to Thea Sanders from Nottingham Trent University.

In recognition of her services to the fashion industry and support of young British talent, fashion journalist Suzy Menkes was presented with the GFW Lifetime Achievement Award.

Really happy to see GFW celebrating Lauren Smith.
Lauren has just won herself a half day consulting.

Let's make sure she gets more business insight in any future fashion business venture.
