Hermès becomes first luxury brand to open at street-level in India

French luxury brand Hermès has opened its first standalone store in Mumbai making it the first luxury brand to open a street-level store in India.

Usually luxury brands open in five star hotels or in one of the two luxury malls, Emporio in New Delhi and UB City in Bengaluru, according to reports. It is thought to be the first time a brand has moved away from this format.

“This is the perfect way for Hermès to make its presence in India,” said chief executive Patrick Thomas. “It is symbolic of the relationship of the brand to India, to be Indian in India and to share some activities with our customers.”

The store, which is 5,000 sq ft, had a soft opening in July but was officially launched this week. To mark the launch, Hermès created 27 special edition saris made in silk and inspired by its famous scarf patterns.

The opening of the new store brings the total number of Hermès stores in India to three.
