High-profile LFW designers say no to size zero

The UK fashion industry can police itself and does not need an outright ban on skinny models, designers told Drapers this week ahead of London Fashion Week.

Nicole Farhi, Ben de Lisi and Paul Smith were among the brands that said they would not be using size zero models - a UK size four - during LFW, which runs from February 11-16.

Nicole Farhi's spokeswoman said the designer preferred to make clothes for sizes eight to 10, and that would be reflected on the catwalk. Paul Smith Women said its samples were made for size 10 models.

A spokeswoman for Ben de Lisi said: "It's not a look we go for. We all have a responsibility to look after the welfare of the models."

The issue has taken centre stage in the weeks before LFW after British Fashion Council chief executive Hilary Riva sent a letter to designers and other industry stakeholders asking them to only use healthy models on their catwalks (Drapers, January 13).

Designer Julia Clancey agreed that brands must act responsibly. "It is disturbing that some designers choose models who look like anorexic boys," she said.

But designer Manish Arora said smaller-sized models were vital for his collection. "I choose models to fit my clothes, which I also show in India where Asian models are of a smaller build than Western women," he added.
