High street fashion sales dip

Clothing and footwear sales on the UK high street have slipped, with Black Friday failing to draw visitors to physical stores.

Like-for-like fashion sales fell 0.8% in the week to 26 November compared with the previous week, according to BDO’s high street sales tracker.

However, the decrease marked an improvement on the 3.8% drop seen during the same week last year.

BDO said despite two-thirds of fashion respondents reporting negative like-for-like sales this week, it was the category’s best performance since late September.

Total like-for-like sales were down by 3% off a decrease of 1.6% for the same week last year. BDO attributed this to a wet start to the week and poor turnout for Black Friday promotions for retailers participating in the Sales event.

Overall footfall was down 2.3%, with high street visitor numbers down 1.3% compared with the same week last year.

Retail park footfall dropped by 2.3% from last year, with footfall at shopping centres down by 4.1% compared to the same week last year.

Homewares was the only category to enjoy a positive in-store result this week.
