Like-for-like fashion sales on the high street have dropped by 5.26% in the penultimate week before Christmas, marking a sixth consecutive week of decline.
BDO’s high street sales tracker showed average clothes sales in stores fell by 5.8% in the week to 17 December compared with the same period last year, while footwear sank by 6.2%.
Combined fashion sales were down from a 6.8% decline for the same week last year.
BDO said these contributed to the “worst week of December so far”. Total like-for-like sales in the week before Christmas were down by 5.3% compared with a 4.6% decline during the same week last year.
Footfall was down by 3.2% across all retail destinations. Shopping centres saw the steepest decrease, with the number of visitors falling by 4.8%.
High street visitor numbers fell by 1.8% compared to the same week last year, while retail parks saw footfall reduce by 4.6%.
