Matalan has opened a new store on the Cardiff high street today, as the value retailer continues its push into prime location space.
The family-owned firm opened a store in Liverpool’s Williamson Square last autumn and signed a lease for its first store on London’s Oxford Street in July, which is due to open next year.
The 40,000 sq ft Cardiff store is split across four floors at 43 Queen Street and stocks womenswear, menswear, kidswear and homewares.
The ribbon was cut by Welsh designer Julien Macdonald, who has created forthcoming men’s and womenswear collections for the retailer.
The site was formerly occupied by Primark, which has moved to an alternate location.
Matalan chief executive Jason Hargreaves said: “We are excited to open our first high street store within Cardiff’s vibrant city centre. Keeping family at the heart of everything we do, the store has been designed to make shopping with a family on the high street that little bit easier.”
Matalan now has 218 UK stores in the UK.
