Family-run firm Clarkes opens second department store in Belper

A family-run department store in Ripley, Derbyshire, opened a second store in nearby Belper last week.

Clarkes of Ripley has opened a store at 30-32 King Street in Belper to join its existing store at 8-18 Grosvenor Road in Ripley, offering brands including White Stuff, Weird Fish, Seasalt and Jacques Vert.

The firm is run by David Clarke and his sister Deborah Matthews, whose grandfather started the business as a tailor in 1912.

“We’ve been warmly welcomed by the local town and had lots of positive early feedback,” Clarke told Drapers.

Belper was named the best high street and market town in the UK in November 2014. Judges of the Future High Streets Forum’s The Great British High Street competition praised the town for its successful transformation into a go-to destination for both locals and visitors.
