In pictures: Brent Cross shopping centre turns 40

Brent Cross shopping centre in north London celebrates its 40th anniversary today.

The centre was billed as the first American-style shopping mall in the UK when it opened on March 2, 1976.

The centre’s three department stores, Fenwick, John Lewis and Marks & Spencer, have remained in the shopping centre since it opened, alongside other retailers including Mothercare, Miss Selfridge and Russell & Bromley.

“Following its launch in 1976, Brent Cross Shopping Centre rapidly established itself as the capital’s leading retail destination and has continued to outperform expectations,” said David Atkins, chief executive of joint owner Hammerson.

“Now in its fortieth year the centre remains very much at the heart of retail and still welcomes the world’s leading brands.”
