Independents ‘outdid the market’ over Christmas

Independent retailers outperformed the market in the run up to the crucial Christmas trading period and were saved by last minute shoppers.

Members of Bira reported trading for the three months to December 31 edged up by 0.68% year on year. BRC-KPMG figures showed overall like-for-like trading over the quarter was flat at 0.1%.

Department stores performed strongly during the quarter up 6.13% on 2013 however clothing and footwear stores dropped 1.82%.

The Bira Confidence Index found those describing themselves as “very confident” double to 7.74%, while “anxious” retailers dropped slightly from 38.55% to 38.07%.
