Independent sportswear buying group Stag has signed up a raft of new brands as sports retailers look to expand their offer and outdoor retailer membership grows.
The group, which represents about 430 independent retailer members, has added suppliers including footwear brands Converse, Gola, MBT, CAT and Timberland, and sports brand Odlo for its next show, which takes place at the Cotswold Water Park Four Pillars Hotel in South Cerney, Gloucestershire, on November 23-24.
Stag managing director Ward Robertson said the group was hoping to expand the type and number of brands at the show. He added: “Membership has doubled in the past five years and we’ve added more outdoor brands. Almost 25% of the group is made up of outdoor retailers at the moment.”
Sean Kayleff, owner of sportswear independent Hockey Warehouse in Leicester, which is a member of Stag, said he was looking to expand his business from its core sports offer to become a one-stop-shop.
“We want to treat customers like people rather than just rugby players or hockey players,” he said. “Sales are up on last year, but two of my rivals have moved into new sports areas, so it’s about survival. I’m interested in looking at MBT footwear and the other new brands at Stag are all good additions.”
Stag members are billed directly from the buying group for orders, which are often negotiated at a discount.
Sportswear indie Cardiff Sportsgear has been trading for 42 years and joined the group earlier this year. “Business isn’t too bad,” said owner Andrew Jordan. “But we wanted to take advantage of discounts that Stag have negotiated.”
The Stag show is open to members only.
