Intu will introduce 4G across 10 of its shopping centres to complement the existing free Wi-Fi provided at all of its sites.
The shopping centre owner has signed a deal with Wireless Infrastructure Group (WIG) to provide coverage and capacity throughout the public areas of themalls, in food courts and deep into anchor stores.
The shopping centres in question are the Trafford Centre, Lakeside, Metrocentre, Braehead, Merry Hill, Derby, Eldon Square, Watford, Victoria Centre and Uxbridge.
Intu also offers free, secure phone chargers in its sites, as well as free click-and-collect from various retailers through its own website, as part of its strategy to enhance omnichannel retailing and provide a seamless online and offline experience.
“With half the UK population visiting an intu branded shopping centre each year, and over a million customers a day, providing continuous and consistent 4G mobile connections is crucial,” said Trevor Pereira, commercial and digital director of Intu.
Scott Coates, WIG chief executive, added: “Our partnership with intu has enabled the largest shopping centre roll out of 4G in the UK and comes as part of our commitment to invest £100m in small cell networks over the next three years.”
