Intu to spruce up Watford shopping centre ahead of expansion

Intu has announced plans for a £13m makeover of its Intu Watord shopping centre ahead of the opening of its expansion later this year.

In advance of the opening of the £180m 400,000sq ft new space, the ceilings and lighting in the existing centre will be replaced, and the customer car parks will also be upgraded. The expanded centre will have a phased opening from September.

The centre is currently anchored by a John Lewis store, and is home to branches of Apple, Zara and Mac and Kurt Geiger.

New retailers in the expanded centre will include Debenhams, Jack Wills and Superdry.

Rebecca Ryman, regional managing director at Intu, said: “Every area of the centre is being redesigned and redeveloped as we get ready to launch our new extension.

”We’re creating what will be one of the biggest in-town retail and leisure destinations and combined with our extensive mall refurbishment programme, this will create the very best environment for Intu Watford’s retailers to flourish and attract an expanding affluent catchment base.”

The refurbishment programme was started last year by contractor Knight Harwood and will complete in the coming months. Laing O’Rourke is the appointed contractor for Intu Watford’s extension.
