Ipswich independent to close after 80 years

Ipswich independent Browne’s Menswear & The Dress Room will close its doors for the final time at the end of the month, after four years of increasing overheads and falling sales.

The family firm is now in the third generation and was established more than 80 years ago. Browne’s stocks men’s outerwear and casualwear on the ground floor of 43 Upper Brook Street in Ipswich, while The Dress Room stocks promwear on the first floor.

Owner Carol Lloyd told the Ipswich Star: “It’s sad but it’s got to the point where we couldn’t carry on like this. We were left with no alternative; when you are starting to lose money it’s crazy but sometimes you just have to go forward in a different direction.”

Lloyd said she will continue to sell some products online under a new brand name, and will keep running the dress business from a new location, which she is currently searching for.

She added: “You just can’t compete with the high street now. Customers want the cheapest price as possible and suppliers cut me up on their websites.

“A lot of the stuff we used to sell is supplied by the companies themselves now. The internet is not a level playing field, costs are just so much lower.”

Browne’s Menswear & The Dress Room has not yet responded to Drapers’ request for comment.
