J Crew appoints new chief design officer

Johanna Uurasjarvi has been appointed as J Crew’s new chief design officer.  

Uurasjarvi joins from furniture business West Elm, and will take responsibility for overall design and direction of J Crew as well as other brands Crewcuts and Mercantile.

Prior to her role as director of West Elm, Uurasjarvi was creative director at Anthropologie. At J Crew she succeeds Somsack Sikhounmuong, who left the company last year.

Uurasjarvi is a former colleague of J Crew chief executive Jim Brett, who was previously president at West Elm. 

J Crew sales decreased 7% to $391.9m (£298.5m) for thefirst quarter of 2018.
