January fashion sales up

Fashion sales grew 5.3% for the four weeks to 27 January according to the BDO High street Sales Tracker, giving retailers a much-needed positive start to the year.

While most of the growth was driven by online sales, with total non-store sales up 19.1%, in-store like-for-like fashion sales grew 0.6%, the first positive result since July 2018.

However, BDO’s records show that in-store sales have not grown above 1% in the past 16 months.

The beginning of the month was particularly strong as shoppers sought out Sale purchases. Like-for-like fashion sales for week one in January saw 11.77% growth. Sales slowed as the month progressed due to poor weather and dwindling consumer confidence.
