John Lewis beats last year's Christmas sales record

John Lewis has smashed last year's biggest Christmas week with sales nearing £96 million for the week ending December 8. The record trading came one week earlier than last year's biggest Christmas week at the department store.

John Lewis said that last weeks' sales were up 5.2% on last year and 11.7% ahead week-on-week.

Last week was also a record week for John Lewis Direct, the department store's online operation. John Lewis Direct sales were up 40% on 2006.

The retailer said that it expected next week to be the peak Christmas trading week.

Director of selling operations Dan Knowles said: "We are delighted to be celebrating record sales. It has been a strong week across the board from our furnishing departments to our festive ones. With two weeks' shopping left before Christmas it is clear that John Lewis continues to take market share. This coming week we are expecting more good results from online sales as well as a real 'buzz' in our toy departments where Star Wars is already proving to be a huge hit this year."
