John Lewis clearance boosts sales

Sales at John Lewis rose 4.9% for the week to January 12 compared to the same period last year.

Lingerie and women's footwear sales helped drive the uplift in the last week of clearance. The womenswear division had a 12.3% increase, with menswear, leisure and beauty showing a 10.2% uplift and kidswear sales up double digits for the whole year.

Total sales including the foodhall were £52.69 million for the week.

Managing director Andy Street said: "It was an exciting week for our fashion offer, with lingerie, women's shoes and beauty all performing extremely well after a very good 2007. It was encouraging to see strong sales on own-brand clothing and great to see all four children's clothing buyerships with strong double-digit annual gains. After a Christmas of excess, we look forward to seeing the result of the recent sports expansion in all shops"

John Lewis Direct sales were up 26%.
