John Lewis confirms late Christmas rush

John Lewis saw sales rise 1.2% to £71 million for the week ended December 27. The week marked a record start to John Lewis' Clearance Sale.

After a difficult November, trade built steadily over the last month, finishing with a surge on the Sunday to Wednesday before Christmas. John Lewis said it then topped it all with a record first day of Clearance. A good number of shops opened early, and sales hit £21.4m, up 7% (excluding VAT) on last year. Over the full week, 12 shops, including John Lewis Direct, hit record days.

In the last full week's trading before Christmas, John Lewis Direct surged to a 60% increase on the year.
