John Lewis continues Christmas surge

Cufflinks, knitwear and outerwear for men were the star fashion performers at department store group John Lewis last week, helping to drive sales by 7.6%.

In womenswear, handbags and watches were the top sellers in the week to November 17, as shoppers started to make Christmas purchases.

Away from fashion, John Lewis reported strong sales in its electrical, home and technology category and toy department.

Online sales in the week were up 31% year-on-year.

“Price matching activity this week has once again reassured shoppers about our commitment to being Never Knowingly Undersold whilst partners across distribution are gearing up to the peak online week, which we expect in just three week’s time,” said managing director Andy Street.

“Customers are clearly continuing to enjoy and celebrate our Christmas TV advert with sales of the ‘knit your own snowman’ kit soaring. In addition, the snowman has been popping up in locations around the UK, spending Friday in a Westminster phone box and yesterday at Twickenham.

“This activity has delighted our Twitter followers, with many sharing their photos having spotted the snowman, and will continue next week.”
