John Lewis expansion plans hit

John Lewis said its expansion plans could be hit by property companies scaling back new developments in the wake of the economic downturn.

John Lewis managing director Andy Street told the Independent on Sunday: “Yes, the brakes could be put on our roll-out of stores across the UK, but its not down to us - it’s down to the property companies.”

John Lewis is traditionally an attractive anchor tenant for property firms developing new shopping centres.

John Lewis will open a store in Leicester this Thursday. It has a further 11 stores in the pipeline, including a shop in Cardiff.
