Womenswear was the strongest performer, up 5.3%, with silk pyjamas selling particularly well in the run-up to Christmas.

Overall, the department store chain’s sales were up 7% on the same week in 2014, to £171.8m. Online sales were up 30.3% and John Lewis has extended its click-and-collect deadline to 8pm today (December 23) so customers can pick up orders from 2pm on Christmas Eve.

Managing director Andy Street said: “Customers clearly want to keep shopping right through to Christmas Eve, and with the final few shopping days left we are expecting our shops to be incredibly busy as people are off work.”

Clearance starts online at 5pm on Christmas Eve and in stores on December 27.
