John Lewis sales fell by 6.8% to £68.8m for the week ending April 11, compared to the same week last year which was the week prior to Easter.
Fashion was the best performing category but fell 2% due to the early Easter this year.
Ed Connolly, buying director at John Lewis, said: “Womenswear saw a lift on warm weather product against the year. Women’s accessories had outstanding performances from sunglasses year on year and sandals with a particularly impressive performance from our latest own-brand ranges.
“Fashion customers are starting to think about their summer social occasions with a strong performance on men’s formalwear and lift on women’s occasionwear. Childrenswear continued to perform well with babywear 11% up, and a strong uplift on schoolwear and children’s shoes demonstrated that parents were preparing for sending the kids back to school after the Easter holidays.”
Overall fashion sales increased 5.6% for the last 10 weeks.
