Fashion sales at John Lewis grew 17.4% in the week to March 14, as days began to get warmer.
Women’s accessories benefited from a spike ahead of Mother’s Day on March 15, while men’s denim and sportswear also performed well.
Overall sales at John Lewis during the week were up 12.9% to £74.7m. Online sales were up 23.2%.
Maggie Porteous, director of selling, North and new format at John Lewis, said: “The earlier fall of Mother’s Day this year makes comparisons tricky to read, but there is no doubt that gift buying last week propelled us to a super double figure of 12.9% on last year.”
She added: “The days are getting warmer, the evenings are getting lighter and spring is definitely in the air. Our customers’ thoughts will be turning to Easter pursuits, with the school holiday period just a couple of weeks away.”
John Lewis was yesterday named the retailer with the best reputation in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, in a study by management consultancy Reputation Institute.
