Fashion sales at John Lewis rose 12.4% during the week of the department store’s 150th anniversary.
The birthday celebrations kicked off on May 3, with a nationwide TV campaign and a host of special items including a series of exclusive collections.
For the seven days to May 10, womenswear was the strongest performer, up 16.1% on last year. Men’s and sport followed with 15.7%, while women’s accessories rose 12.5%. Kidswear increased 6.4%.
High Wycombe was the top store during the week, up 51.6% on last year, while Newbury (31.6%), Poole (23%), Croydon (20.7%) and Swindon (20.2%) were all strong. Online sales climbed 28.1%, with click-and-collect up 60%.
David Barford, director of selling for London and the South, said: “Our 150th celebration weekend went off very well with sales on Sunday strong, and the 150-year assortment continuing to find favour with customers as they discover the great width of products that make up this historic milestone for us.
“Looking ahead, this weekend promises to be warmer, putting us in a good place to maximise our summer assortments with customers beginning to focus on outdoor activities.”
