John Lewis fashion sales up 9.1%

Fashion sales at John Lewis were up 9.1% in the week to January 10, compared to the same period last year.

Online fashion sales were up 35% on last year, driving an overall boost in online trading of 19%. Sales across all categories were up 3.8%.

Jon Williams, director of merchandising operations for John Lewis, said: “The shape of sales suggests customers are preparing for the practicalities of the new year.

“The annual fitness drive is being fully embraced with sports goods up 27% year-on-year, including large sports equipment. Families got set for the return to school with kidswear 26% up on last year.

“As we enter the last week of clearance customer focus will move firmly to the new season; spring stocks are well set and core availability is strong as we refresh the shops and website to really kick-start spring.”
