John Lewis gets uplift for new year

Sales at department store group John Lewis rose 10.9% for the week to January 5, in a week where most branches traded over six days against seven last year.

John Lewis Direct was up 46% on last year, with the cold weather boosting clothing sales across womenswear, menswear and girlswear.

The group said that clearance sales remain strong but full-price product including new lines also performed well.

Some 19 stores posted increases on last year, with Kingston, Milton Keynes, Watford and the Scottish branches performing particularly well.

Meanwhile, John Lewis was voted the UK's favourite retailer in a poll of 6,000 consumers conducted by retail analyst Verdict Research. The department store also came first in the clothing, homewares and electricals categories of Verdict's Consumer Satisfaction Index 2008.
