John Lewis own-brand thrives as fashion sales dip

John Lewis has posted a dip in overall fashion sales in the week to 16 December, but its own-brand offering has bucked the trend with 7.6% growth.

Total fashion sales at the department store dropped by 1% on the same week last year. Despite this, own-brand fashion saw a strong week, with cashmere enjoying record sales after surging by 31%.

Men’s knitwear, which also saw a record week, was highlighted another strong performer.

Total sales at the department store chain were down 0.6% to £171.4m, compared to the same week last year, since adverse weather and heavy snow saw reduced footfall.

However, the retailer said that trade “picked up” towards the end of the week.
