Fashion sales surged at John Lewis last week as poor weather drove shoppers into stores.
The retailer said fashion sales rose by 17.5% in the week to April 7, with overall sales at the department store chain up 27% compared to the same week last year.
Within fashion, kidswear was the strongest performer and the back-to-school element played a key role with kids footwear delivering a 33% rise. Babywear was also particularly strong, with sales 37% up.
All branches saw an uplift with the vast majority of stores delivering a double digit increase. Leicester was the top performer with a 42% rise, followed by Bluewater at 37% and then Trafford at 33%.
Online sales at Johnlewis.com rose by 39% compared to the same week last year.
David Barford, director, selling operations, region B at John Lewis, said: “Trade last week was superb, with an uplift on last year of 27%. In comparison with the Good Friday week last year we delivered a stunning increase of 25%.”
He added: “All in all it was a great week and a fantastic start to the Easter weekend on Friday and Saturday. Here’s looking forward to us continuing to delight our customers in to the spring and beyond.”
