He joined John Lewis in early 2013 as online director, and last year was made responsible for running both the store and online operations at the retailer.

He was previously chief executive of parcel delivery firm Collect+ from June 2010 to February 2013 and UK managing director at eBay for five years from September 2004.

He is expected to start his new role, succeeding Peter Plumb, on or before 4 May 2017.

His replacement has not yet been appointed and a recruitment process is under way.

The news of his departure follows the announcement of Paula Nickolds’ appointment as managing director of John Lewis, replacing Andy Street, earlier this week.
