John Lewis sales boosted by last-minute shoppers

John Lewis is expecting a bumper trading day today, after week-on-week sales rose 1.3% to Saturday December 20. Against last year, sales were down 1.8%.

John Lewis' sales over the final weekend before Christmas were boosted by men buying last minute gifts including lingerie. On Saturday. sales were 6% up on the same day last year, excluding VAT.

John Lewis said that the last time Christmas Day fell on a Thursday, the Monday before was extremely busy.

John Lewis director of retail operations Patrick Lewis said: "We are now into the final run-up to Christmas and expect the last few days to be busy ones. We anticipate sales will continue to be fuelled by 'last-minute' gift items such fragrance and gift sets. Our well known trusted price promise means shoppers can be sure they are getting the best value on these items."
